A Tabula Smaragdina, o fundamento e a síntese da sabedoria original, e o Corpus Hermeticum, de autoria de Hermes Trismegisto, são textos que sempre despertaram o interesse de todos os esoteristas.
Por isso, sempre que alguém considera esses textos, que chegaram aos tempos modernos através de várias traduções, surge a questão: quem foi Hermes Trismegisto? Há várias lendas sobre Hermes, entre elas a de que teria escrito milhares de livros, onde estaria contida toda a sabedoria divina, e de que Pitágoras e Platão teriam obtido todo o conhecimento que tinham por seu intermédio.
Geralmente se pensa que Hermes foi um enviado divino sublime.
