A partir do Renascimento, o beijo perde pouco a sua funcao oficial e sagrada. E se torna um gesto de ternura que toca, mas nao compromete. Pessoas de posicoes diferentes, parentes e amigos, beijam-se dai em diante no rosto, ao passo que o beijo na boca, reservado aos amantes, adquire uma conotacao mais erotica. Nao mais coroa uma relacao, mas a estimula, abre a festa do amor.

Na Revolucao Francesa , no dia 7 de julho de 1792 o abade Lamourette pronunciou um discurso patetico na Assembleia Legislativa, entao dilacerada entre faccoes adversas, e seu apelo foi seguido por uma confraternizacao geral com abracos em nome da fraternidade. Mas, como no dia seguinte as hostilidades aumentaram, o bispo constitucional de Lyon viu seu nome ligado indelevelmente a uma reconciliacao efemera e hipocrita. Quando subiu ao patibulo, o povo o convidou a uma cruel reconciliacao: beijar 'Charlot' (o carrasco).

Conservam a troca de sopro ate' os nossos dias. E ainda assim, frequentemente ritualizada: apos ter esvaziado uma taca de champanhe, com os bracos entrelacados, os homens trocam a 'fraternidade' na boca, e a amizade torna-se sagrada.
As criancas sao ensinadas a beijar a propria mao depois de receberem doces de alguem, e logo mais a beijar as coisas dadas como forma de apreco. O beijar a propria mao foi um custume realizado entre principes e que caiu rapidamente em desuso.
O beijo na boca dos monarcas que eram obrigatorios, a partir do Renascimento deixam de ser normas de etiqueta devido as doencas trasmissiveis naquela epoca. Passa-se ao beija-mao. E quando se tem uma certa intimidade usa-se o simular o beijo, aproximando-se os labios das faces, das maos ou dos objetos recebidos. Quanto ao beijo original, a troca de sopros, fica definitivamente reservado aos amantes. (E' sempre o mais velho que toma a iniciativa)
O mesmo gesto deve ser feito pelos homens a saudar a soberana. O beija mao nunca e' exigido pela rainha: "era o testemunho voluntario de uma respeitosa obediencia".
Zeno
Nos saloes, deve-se apenas rocar com os labios a mao das senhoras; e esse habito desaparecera no final do seculo: em 1904, Bayard ve no gesto o "o reflexo de uma graca fora de moda". Em A consciencia de Zeno (1900) Zeno evoca o beija-mao roubado da jovem pelo qual esta apaixonado e que conhece a muito tempo: ela " se pos a olhar estupefata, os dedos que haviam experimentado o contato de meus labios, como se alguma coisa tivesse ficado gravada neles" A ousadia e' de fato altamente comprometedora.

A ocasiao de resgatar o bom e velho beijo de outrora: festas e aniversarios, e claro, principalmente o Natal e o Ano Novo. O anguillaneu (gui* do Ano Novo) das provincias ritualiza o costume: o beijo trocado sob o gui em primeiro de janeiro e' uma promessa de felicidade para o ano todo.
